I can't see pictures on my Friends page. Or, rather, I can see pictures just fine, as long as they're linked from some external source. If people post a picture direct to their LJ, I not only can't see the picture, I also don't even get any indication at all that a picture is absent. This caused quite a lot of bafflement before I worked out what the problem was, since I got completely empty posts, or quite notes culminating in "and then I saw this..." and then just ending. Often, it was only other people's comments that showed me that I was missing the whole point of the post.

I don't know if it's a related issue, but I can't post pictures directly to my own LJ, either. If I try, I get the message "you must be logged in to do this," or something along those lines, even though I am logged in.

I use Firefox, properly updated with all latest versions. I also can't view pictures when using Firefox on the laptop, but when I dig out an ancient copy of Internet Explorer and view my Friends page through that, all the pictures are present and correct.

Is there some obvious setting that I need to change?

There is a setting in Firefox to view pictures/placeholders/neither, because it came up when I was setting it up on the new laptop, but I am damned if I know where to find it!

Check under Tools/Options/Content and make sure the relevant boxes are ticked... It may not work. On the other hand, it may.

That's not the answer, I'm afraid. All others pictures - ones from Photobucket, Flickr etc. - do indeed display properly (and duly disappear when I untick that particular setting in Firefox.) It's only pictures that are posted direct to LJ that don't work.

I didn't think you could post photos directly into LJ except by using Scrapbook - which is where LJ loads them - so it may be your LJ settings that are at fault.

I meant Scrapbook, then. Since I can't access it myself, I'm a bit vague about the details. I've gone through all my settings, and can't see anything there, either. All the pictures that are invisible when I'm logged in via Firefox show up properly when I'm logged in using IE - e.g. at work - which makes me think that it's not something to do with my LJ settings. Surely my LJ settings would apply to my account, regardless of what browser I'm using?

Odd. Very. I think Scrapbook stores in the normal formats, and the 'partner' for LJ is Photobucket, with which you are apparently not having problems.

Are the userpics in people's posts or comments showing up?

So am I right in understanding that you can't see this photo (Scrapbook):

But you can see this photo (Facebook):

..and is this problem only seen from within your home network, or is it generic to any computer/connection to which you connect with your LJ account? IE, do you have some AV/firewall thing that is messing you about?

I just checked on Pellinor's computer, using my LJ login on Firefox, and there's no problem there. Hmm... It's just occurred to me that it might be something to do with the LJ login manager extension that I have installed on my computer and the laptop, for easy toggling between LJ logins. At any rate, that's the only obvious difference between my Firefox and Pellinor's version.

EDIT: Aha! That's (very probably) it! When I log out and log on again the long-winded way, the hidden pictures suddenly become visible. I have the LJ login manager set to automatically log me on as ladyofastolat, but it seems as if the the scrapbook doesn't recognise this as being me properly logged on, so hides pictures in locked posts.

Yay! Result!

Well, I would have thought so... but I can see both. I can always see all your pics, too, so if they're done through LJ scrapbook, I'll have to rethink the terms of this problem.

Okay. Looking back at a few of the recent posts with invisible pictures, and checking the provenance of pictures in posts that I could view properly, it seems that I can see scrapbook pics in public posts, but in friends locked posts they completely vanish. The plot thickens.

The other explanation is that Your Computer is Trying to Confuse You.

In which case, it has clearly enlisted the laptop in its evil scheme. *glowers in general direction of said evil computers*

My guess is a cookie problem. Log out of LJ, clear all cookies for livejournal.com (and any similar domains, like pics.livejournal.com) and clear the browser cache. Hopefully that will fix it.

(I saw an interesting one at work on linkedin, where person A logged in to linkedin, did something and then clicked "sign out". Person B then logged in with their account details, whereupon person A's profile appeared. Solved by clearing cookies.)

Not much help to you, but it seems that other people are having similar problems as in the comments section of [livejournal.com profile] doctorwhy
