More over-long musings...
When lurking in the library stack on Saturday, I found a book lurking in a dark corner. It was Etiquette and Modern Manners, dating from the early 1980s. I think it is quite significant that my initial assumption was that it was a parody. Except in the field of weddings, etiquette guides seem to be something far more often done as parody of comedy than "for real." Victorian books of etiquette are fascinating, alien, and often hilarious. But is etiquette a thing of the past? Should it be a thing of the past?
