A fanciful menagerie

Sometimes it seems as if half the photos I take are of comical medieval animals...
Most of these are from the choir stalls. I started off by saying things like, "oh, look at that happy lion!" The first few I noticed could conceivably pass as lions - although some were lions who had decided that a full mane was SO last year, and had gone for the bearded look instead. And how proud that are of their fine beards!

But then it all started to fall apart. This could be a winged lion, but winged lions normally look like lions with wings, not like eagles who have had their heads chopped off and replaced with the head of a rathed fed-up lion.

And here we have a bird who needs a haircut. If not for the floppy hair in its eyes, it might have noticed that Cthulhu was looming up behind it.

I have called this "dog.jpg," but it really isn't.

And these ones, I just don't know. There's a sort of boar/goat/dragon... thing. The one with the long beak could be just a regular bird, but I don't trust it not to have some other animal part lurking about its person - perhaps anteater? The final one is a sort of owl/lion/armadillo (or woodlouse?) hybrid that I suspect would look quite impressive in the monster manual, but would be pretty rubbish in practice.

And, also from Bath Abbey, we have a ceremonial presentation beaver, a twirly thing, and a happy frog.
