Ships that pass in the night
Dec. 11th, 2005 07:55 amGrr! Today is the second time in three days that I've been woken stupidly early by fog-horns in the Solent. I think it is very selfish of these boats. How unreasonable they are, wanting to let other boats know where they are! They should just blunder around blindly, crash into each other, and cause death and carnage all around. That's a far better option than keeping innocent people awake all night.
(Hmm... Can the word "carnage" apply to drownings? By its ety. it seems to imply the presence of bloody flesh and body parts, but my dictionary just says "a heap of slain (obs.); slaughter". I like this idea of "a heap of slain", though. Presumably if the slain are just lying higgedly-piggedly on the field of slaughter, it doesn't count as carnage. I think they need to be at least... um... six high to qualify as a heap, and thus as carnage.)
Hmph. I was all busy ranting, and now I've got distracted by etymologies.
