Oh

I had strange pulsating multi-coloured zigzags shooting around the top left of my vision for half an hour, and now I have a bad headache and feel sick. Is this a migraine? I've never had one, so wouldn't recognise one if it leapt out at me and went Boo!, and my head hurts too much to look it up. (Am typing with eyes mostly shut.)

Off to bed.

*hugs better*

Hope you are okay for WightFrag. If there's anything we can do to help - you know, clearing up some of those annoying mounds of sausages & bacon, making space on your bookshelves, emptying a few bottles - you only have to say ...

[identity profile] ladyofastolat.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Not so fast! If I don't get better, there won't be any mounds of sausages, bacon or bottles, since I have to job of getting them tomorrow morning. We do have a pile of books that are free to whoeever wants them, though (though in the case of more than one person wanting them, we reserve the right to challenge the claimants to a contest of our devising.)

Don't overdo it tomorrow, if you are still feeling bad we can shop en route or when we get there. We are pretty open on time, so if it would help if we made a shopping stop in Southampton or something, just give us a ring.

[identity profile] ladyofastolat.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I feel mostly better now, except for some general floppiness and a sense of not being quite here, so should be perfectly okay after a Good Night's Sleep (TM). I do particularly want to get to the farmers' market early tomorrow morning for happy bacon, sossijes and mince, but if all else fails, I have a tame Pellinor who can be dragged out of bed and dispatched there in my place. They have their uses at times. ;-)

I'll send Precious, after all we are apparently interchangeable....

Ah OK - wasn't sure if Pellinor was otherwise employed.

I am pleased you are feeling better now - but please don't overdo it!

Seconded, we plan to shop anyway around midday tomorrow so give us a shout if we should bring anything.

Sounds very like the descriptions I've heard and read.

(trundles you off to bed with cold compresses and Giles to read you a bedtime story)

Feel better soon.

[identity profile] ladyofastolat.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Feeling a lot better now. Instead of Giles, though, I got one of my cats, who was so excited by the sight of me in bed in a Pellinor-free world that she nuzzled excitedly against my arms and purred himself into a frenzy.

[identity profile] gileswench.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! My kitty, Jake, prefers it when my beloved and I are both in the bed. Jake likes to be Between, you see, for maximum pets and tummy rubs.

I'm glad to hear you're feeling better. I have no doubt purring and nuzzling from a frenzied cat had a lot to do with your recovery.

[identity profile] ladyofastolat.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Precious and Pellinor do not ever exist in the same room. (In fact, were we in a superhero movie, I would be starting to have serious suspicions.) I can tell where Pellinor is by the sound of fastly scampering catty feet, as she flees as far away as she can. As far as I know, he's never done anything remotely horrid to her, but she is convinced that he eats cats.

[identity profile] gileswench.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure Pellinor would never, ever eat cats...unless there was plenty of mustard.

Based on the searching questions of three neurologists and a neuro-opthalmologist, you are having a classic migraine. Unlike me; I only had the one-sided headache with photophobia and phonophobia.

Feeling a bit better now... I'm glad to hear you've had some encouraging news about your problems.

Yes, that is almost certainly migraine. I had the visual disturbance happen to me for the first time a few years back, and when I also couldn't read because of holes in my vision and it kept on for a while I went to doc to find out if I needed to be worried. I was told it was migraine, and if it didn't hurt too badly I was ahead of the game.

[identity profile] ladyofastolat.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It was really quite bizarre. I've never had anything like it before. I knew that strange visual things often happened with migraines, but I'd always assumed that the headache happened at the same time. Oh well. There's a first time for everything...

Oww

[identity profile] themis1.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost definitely migraine - I've only had 3 or 4 proper migraines in my entire life, but the visual distortion always precedes the actual headache for me, too.

Hopefully a couple of hours in a quiet, dark room and you'll be find again. Don't worry unless you start getting them a LOT!

I lay down for a few hours and even managed to sleep for a bit. I still feel a bit fuzzy and not quite here, but it's mostly better. A very odd feeling, though - though the actual headache part of it was less severe than many dehydration headaches I've had in the past.

[identity profile] tovaglia.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, migraine. The zigzags are called fortification spectra.

[identity profile] ladyofastolat.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortification spectra... I like that name. It sounds vaguely science fictiony. "There's nothing else for it, captain. We have to use the fortification spectra."

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I never imagined they might have a name!

[identity profile] chris-maslen.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It almost certainly is a migraine but the advice we were always told to give out to people over the phone was if you're seeing flashing lights or having any kind of visual disturbance then have your eyes tested.

Eye tests do a lot more than just checking your prescription, in fact checking your prescription is the smallest part of an opthalmic examination. There are a whole raft of neurological conditions which have visual disturbances as early symptoms. Early diagnosis invariably aids potential treatment and if it is "just" a migraine at least you'll have the comfort of a professional diagnosis to that effect.

[identity profile] ladyofastolat.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
*guilty look* I do very definitely need my eyes tested, since I have one quite short-sighted eye and one slightly long-sighted eye, and I'm finding it increasingly hard to compensate. Maybe this will be the trigger for me to actually do something about it. Or, knowing me, most likely not. *looks guilty again*

Sure sounds like one. Have you eaten or done anything out of the ordinary? I can tell you that if I eat or drink anything that includes artificial sweeteners my life will not be worth living for the next few days.

Lie down in a darkened room - which you probably already are doing - and I hope it passes soon.

[identity profile] ladyofastolat.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I lay down for a few hours, and while I don't feel entirely right yet, it's mostly gone. I can't think of anything unusual that I did, though. I had a morning on my computer at work, then drove out to the nearest shop, and it started as soon as I got out of the car in the shop car park. Odd.

[identity profile] helflaed.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like one to me (Mine tend to be green and purple flashing blobs, vomiting and a "normal" headache- most odd)

It might be worth getting yourself checked out anyway.

I'd second the advice on the darkened room, I use Anadin extra(the caffeine seems to help)

[identity profile] ladyofastolat.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
My headache certainly wasn't any worse than many others I've had, and I often feel sick with a headache, so the only new thing was the visual disturbance and a general sense of... strangeness. It seems mostly better now, though.

[identity profile] king-pellinor.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be worse, it could be vomiting green and purple flashing blobs :-)

[identity profile] jane-somebody.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes, it is. As everyone else has already said by now. I have had some really bad headaches that were worse than the few migraines I've had, so it really is more about the type of symptoms than the severity. Obviously if it starts occuring with any frequency at all, see a doctor, as they can give you things for it. Also (possible TMI coming up, sorry) more than very occasional migraines may be grounds for switching from one type of contraceptive pill to another.
