Possibility 2 for me - my journeys are almost universally either 5 miles or 50 (each way), and for the latter I'll make sure I've got plenty of fuel before setting out.

On possibility 3: I recall allegramente joking many years ago that the solution to the low fuel light was to go round and round a roundabout, causing the fuel to slosh over to the side of the tank where the sensor was!
